We were up at 5:30 today and had
breakfast at 6:30. We were ready for the day at 7:15. About 7:05, Harvey Nochese showed up
to join us for breakfast with his guys who had already made it down from Cito. We headed
for our horseback ride at 7:45. Denis' horse was Phantom which was the same horse that
threw Bob Greeley in 1996 at Beaubein. And Bob and his Crew were there to make sure that
Denis knew all about Phantom. The Wrangler Brian was also a horseman at Beaubein in 1996.
The ride was uneventful and turned out to be an all Monmouth Council ride with Crews 4, 5,
and 6. |

After the ride at 10:30, we met up with Crews 2 and 7 in camp. All
the crews were cooking dinner as they were headed to dry camps that evening. Dinner was
ready about 11:30 just as the first clouds started to appears. They were mostly to the
north. By the time we were done and cleanup was finished, it was 12:55 when we hit the
trail. We arrived at Shaffers' Pass at 2:20 and were up on Shaffers' Peak at about 3. We
took a number of pictures and headed back down of the peak as there were still threats of
a storm. We didn't want to be on the peak or the ridge if it decided to hit. We arrived at
Tooth Ridge Camp about 4:50 and got set up. The views from the camp down towards the
Plains and Base Camp were great. It was a much nicer camp than I expected from what I had
seen walking past in 1992 and 1996. We had our lunch and then finished the day with the
Crew doing a critique of our year of preparation and our touring. And then there was
Thorns and Roses with our favorite Philmont day and favorite Philmont food as extras.
